    Public trust is not a prize which comes with the judge’s gown – it has to be earned and justified

    A judge in Latvia belongs to the category of people whose work is rather frequently reviled, highlighting the negative and overlooking the positive. However, I am certain that deep in our hearts all of us wish to accomplish our work as well as possible. In the last seventy years both the world and we ourselves, entering the European law community, have experienced endless positive changes: development of legislation, increase of funding, accessible opportunities to perfect professionalism. However, it must be admitted that the last year especially was one of the hardest for the Latvian judiciary in its history, and it seems that the public trust in courts has never been as low as at the present time.

    Lack of self-criticism and inability to apply ethical standards threatens independence of judges

    It has been more than two months since the information about possibly tapped phone calls of judges and advocates was first heard. For at least part of the society this event strengthened even more assurance that doubts regarding impartiality and independence of judges and the lawfulness of the adopted adjudications, as well, are grounded.

    I urge to make use of judicial self-management

    Information has been spread in public that causes doubts of court independence, lawfulness of adjudications, on possible agreements between judges and advocates to adopt adjudication favourable for one party, as well as on possible violations of judicial ethics. Such information has been obtained from phone calls obviously tapped unlawfully, and the authenticity of them is now being verified by the prosecutor’s office.
