The Scope of Authority

The Republic of Latvia’s Supreme Court is a part of the country’s independent judicial system. It was established for the purpose of carrying out judicial power and for the strengthening of the rule of law in the country.

The Supreme Court is the highest level court; therefore, it bears the supreme responsibility for a just and non-partisan delivery of justice.

 Basic functions of the Supreme Court

  • Administration of justice at appellate and cassation instance, in line with the principles of fairness and the rule of law, as well as taking into account timeliness of reviewing of cases . Decisions of the Supreme Court are final and may not be appealed.
  • Development of uniform case law und furtherance of legal ideals and the national legal principles.

 Additional functions

  • On the basis of the Investigatory Operations Law, examining the legality and justification of special investigations, acceptance of requests upon secret data available in credit institutions, established in law On credit institutions.
  • Examining citizens' complaints in relation to cases.
