It is good that in such a respectable and academic establishment as the Supreme Court the time may be calculated not only in astronomical years, report years, but also in academic years, admitted the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics when on July 11 he hold a reception for fifteen Supreme Court Judges and employees who found it possible to combine their studies and work and in the academic year of 2007, 2008 completed their studies in higher educational institutions.

The former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans will hold the position of the senator in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate.
The Head of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate Veronika Krumina finds that the experience, knowledge and the professional qualification of A. Gulans meets the requirements of the work in the Senate, and it will be useful and of value in the Department of Administrative Cases.

The Judicial Ethical Commission has acknowledged that a judge engaged also in scientific work and lecturing may in such work use the judgments of the court he/she represents, and express criticism on them, as well.
Such interpretation of the standards of the Latvian Judicial Ethical Code was given by the Ethical Commission on June 27 upon the request of the senator Janis Neimanis of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court Senate.

In Latvia, there has been no case under reviewing which has been renewed already after it is seen from a judgment of the Court of the European Community that the national court has adjudicated the case erroneously. However, such cases become more and more topical for national courts, and this issue was discussed in the colloquium of the Association of the European Highest Administrative Courts in Warsaw in June 15 – 19.

Starting from June 25, Marika Senkane undertakes her duties in the position of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court.
The Saeima (Parliament) confirmed Senkane in the position of the judge of the Supreme Court on June 12, but the structural unit for the judge to perform her duties was determined by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by his order.
Marika Senkane got her higher education Diploma of the University of Latvia with the specialty of a lawyer in 1991. Starting from 1984, for eleven years she worked as a secretary of court sessions and the chief advisor of the Chamber of Criminal Cases in the Supreme Court, afterwards – in the Ministry of Welfare. Then she returned to the judiciary as a judge: in 1996 – 2003 she held the position of a judge in the Riga City Kurzemes District Court, and since 2003 – in the Panel of Civil Cases of the Riga Regional Court.

The first order issued on June 16 by the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics undertaking the duties of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was regarding the expiry of the term of office of the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans, and regarding take-over of the material assets and the official seal. Today [he] takes over the cases and learns about the procedure of work organization in the court.

Starting from Monday, June 16, 2008, Ivars Bickovics holds the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The former Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases I. Bickovics in this position has replaced Andris Gulans who held the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for fourteen years.
