    As of July 11, all the interested persons have access to the study accomplished by the Supreme Court (hereinafter – SC) on the practice of application of punishment, as well as the recommendations expressed by the Department of Criminal Cases and the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court regarding the uniform application of law standards on determination of the punishment.

    Commemoration of the Senator Skudre opens the 90th anniversary of the Latvian judiciary

    The commemoration of Janis Skudre (1889 – 1942), the senator of the Latvian Senate and the Chairman of the Judicial Association in his native home “Lejas Meirani” in the Sauka pagasts (rural district) on July 20 attracted many lawyers and local people.

    Experts of the international mission learn about the Latvian judiciary

    On July 11 the delegation of the EUJUST – THEMIS (EU Rule of Law Mission in Georgia) visited the Supreme Court. The law experts visited Latvia with the aim to exchange views regarding the participation of judges and other lawyers in international civil missions, as well as to learn about the development of the Latvian law system and the participation of experts in international civil missions.
    In the delegation there were representatives from various legal professions from France, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Poland, as well as a participant from Latvia – the judge of the Constitutional Court Uldis Kinis. The head of the Mission Silvie Pantz – a judge, a prosecutor, an advisor in the matters of EU and the Civil Crisis Management from France.
    During the visit in the Supreme Court the delegation met with the Deputies of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chairman of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Pavels Gruzins and the Chairman of the Chamber of Civil Cases Gunars Aigars, as well as the specialists of the Ministry of Justice. The mutual exchange of experience covered court reforms in different countries, ensuring the independence of the judicial power, and the participation of judges in international missions.

    State President meets with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

    Today, July 7, in the Riga Castle the State President Valdis Zatlers met with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics.
    This was the first official meeting of the President with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after I. Bickovics took office. The President congratulated the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and wished success and good luck.

    Zita Kupce promoted to the position of the Chairman of the Administrative Regional Court

    After the meeting of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics and the Minister of Justice Gaidis Berzins on July 7 it was decided to promote the acting chairman of the court Zita Kupce for confirmation by the Saeima (Parliament) to the position of the Chairman of the Administrative Regional Court.
    Z. Kupce was acknowledged the most suitable candidate to the position of the Chairman of the Administrative Regional Court by the commission of the Ministry of Justice which evaluated three nominees who had applied to the announced competition. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Minister of Justice agreed to support the candidate promoted by the commission.

    Decision adopted to promote Sandra Strence to the position of the Chairman of the Riga Regional Court

    Today, on July 2, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics and the Minister of Justice Gaidis Berzins decided to promote Sandra Strence to the position of the Chairman of the Riga Regional Court to be confirmed by the Saeima (Parliament).
    Before the adoption of the decision Ivars Bickovics and Gaidis Berzins met with two candidates – Juris Stukans and Sandra Strence. They were found the most suitable nominees in the competition by the Court Administration, and the suitability of the candidates was assessed also by the work group established by the Ministry of Justice. Both nominees are highly valued as professionals by the Minister of Justice and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
