On the 29th of February the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted vow of Daina Priedniece, the sworn bailiff of Riga regional court.
“There is no fair justice without sentence executed” said Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court having accepted the vow, thus indicating essential importance of bailiffs in court system.

On Wednesday, the 15th of February, 15 pupils from Riga, Malpils, Aluksne, Cesis, Sigulda, Koknese and Majori got acquainted with work of judges, assistants to judges and also the Division of Communication of the Supreme Court.
Having learned about Latvia’s court system and structure of the Supreme Court “shadows” went to court hearing in the Chamber of Criminal Cases. Before the hearing the judge Ludmila Polakova told them about litigation proceedings in criminal cases and progress of the concrete case.

To use knowledge and experience obtained by highly qualified judges effectively, the Board of Justice supported 70 years as maximum age for execution of duties for judges of courts of all levels, providing opportunity to continue execute duties of judge until all cases that were started with participation of the judge are reviewed.
Reviewing possible amendments to the law “On Judicial Power”, which provide changes in procedure of termination of judicial duties, the Board of Justice concludes that it should be necessary to reject from present difference in maximum age which is 65 years for judges of district (city) courts and regional courts and 70 years – for judges of the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the 13th of February, the Board of Justice will discuss creation of mechanism of termination of judicial vocational powers and will establish courts in which judges appointed by the Saeima (the Parliament) will execute their duties, as well as will discuss other issues.
Subcommission on Judicial Politics of Legal Commission of the Saeima asked the Board of Justice to express opinion about possible amendments to the law “On Judicial Power”, which would provide creation of mechanism of termination of judicial vocational powers, giving up vote of the Saeima about discharge of a judge from the post in cases when maximum age of execution of duties is reached.
