On the 16th of May, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted the oath of five advocates admitted in the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.
Number of sworn advocates has been extended by assistants to sworn advocates Evita Kizlo, Milans Kulikovs and Peteris Kusners, as well as Doctors of Law - Janis Rusenieks, lecturer of the Business high school “Turiba” and Nils Zuravlovs, associate professor of the High School of Social Technologies.

Standard of the Civil Procedure Law about right of the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court to submit protest against ruling of a court that has come into effect, doesn’t comply with the Constitution – on the 14th of May, the Constitutional Court announced its judgement in the case “On compliance of the Section 483 of the Civil Procedure Law in its part about right of the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court to submit protest, with the Article 92 of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia”.

The Board of Justice supported candidatures for posts of Chairs of three district courts.
Re-appointment of Chairs of Bauska and Saldus district courts for the term of five years is supported. Iveta Andzane has managed Bauska district court since 1998, and Gunita Galina has managed Saldus district court since 1993.

On the 10th of May, the Constitutional Court announced its judgement, case No 2012-16-01 “On Compliance of the Paragraph Three Section 86 of the law “On Judicial Power” with the Article 102 of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia” and considered legal standard, which prohibits the judge to act in political parties, to be corresponding with the Constitution.

On the 7th of May, twenty students of criminal law from the Netherlands visited the Supreme Court. Students represent AdInformandum – association of criminal law and criminology students.
Students arrived to Latvia to learn about Latvian justice system and peculiarities of criminal procedure.

30th of April, 2013
On the 30th of April, Skaidrite Lodzina, the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, terminated execution of judicial duties. After 41 years spent in the system of justice, Skaidrite Lodzina has retired. Skaidrite Lodzina has been the judge of the Supreme Court since 1995 – for twelve years in the Chamber of Civil Cases and since 2007 – in the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate.

On Thursday, the 25th of April, forty students from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Italy visited the Supreme Court within project of Erasmus Intensive Programme implemented by the Business High School “Turiba”. With lectures, discussions and study visits, students master course on mediation in civil and criminal cases as a way of settlement of disputes in Europe.

The State Control during revision gained assurance that report of 2012 in all essential aspects gives clear and actual idea about financial position of the Supreme Court, its changes and results of operation. Conclusion on correctness of processing of report of the Supreme Court of 2012 is given with no objections.

The Board of Justice supports great part of envisaged amendments to the law “On Judicial Power”, however, some amendments or mechanisms of implementation of those were not accepted, being reviewed in sessions of the Board of Justice on the 8th and the 22nd of April.
