    Delegation of the Supreme Court visits the Supreme Court of Slovakia

    The delegation of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice Ivars Bickovics on the 3rd of September departed for 3-day visit to the Supreme Court of Slovakia in Bratislava to exchange experience.
    Representatives of the Supreme Court will meet the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Slovakia Stefan Garabin, the chairpersons of the Judicial Panel of Administrative Cases, the Judicial Panel of Criminal Cases, the Judicial Panel of Civil Cases and the Judicial Panel of Trade Cases of the Supreme Court and representatives of the Court Administration.

    On issues discussed in session of the Board of Justice on the 27th of August

    The Board of Justice supported budget request of regional courts and district (city) courts summarised by the Ministry of Justice and budget request presented by the Supreme Court for year 2013.
    Budget request of regional courts and district (city) courts for 2013 is for 8% or LVL 2 256 099 more than budget planned for year 2012. Increase of budget is planned for two positions: expenses related to moving of Riga court house of Administrative district court and of court of Ziemelu district of Riga city to new premises, as well as to increase salary of court employees for LVL 40 and to insure court employees.

    Peteris Opincans has been appointed for the post of the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate

    As from the 20th of August, Peteris Opincans starts execute his duties in the post of the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court.
    The decision about appointment of Peteris Opincans, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court in vacant post of the senator of the department was passed in general meeting of senators of the Department of Criminal Cases on the 6th of June.

    Judge of the ECHR: courts may become serious players on national power ground by making qualitative judgments

    Ineta Ziemele, the judge of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) spends her summer vacation in Latvia working – also meeting judges of the Supreme Court.
    The meeting in the Supreme Court on the 6th of August was continuation of discussion that rose up between judges of the ECHR and national highest court instances in the international conference “The Role of National Supreme courts in Protection of Human Rights” on the 2nd of May, searching for common points of work in field of human rights protection.

    On the 30th of July, Gunars Aigars, the deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and at present – executor of duties of the Chief Justice accepted vow of notary Iluta Sauliete.
    Iluta Sauliete will execute duties of sworn notary on the territory of Vidzeme regional court – in Valka and Smiltene

    The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court meets the new Minister of Justice

    On the 19th of July, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, met Janis Bordans, the new Minister of Justice to discuss prospective of further cooperation.
    During the first visit, the Minister indicated his general vision of field of justice and prior directions of operation including effectivisation of court proceedings as well as improvement of IT solutions in field of justice.

    The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court takes vow of two notaries of Latgale regional court

    On the 6th of July, the notaries’ vow ceremony took place in the Supreme Court. During this ceremony, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, took vow of new notaries Linda Damane and Evija Paluma.

    The Chamber of Criminal Cases proceeds with reviewing cases subordinated to it until amendments of Criminal Procedure Law

    The Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court continues its work also after July 1, when amendments of the Criminal Procedure Law came into force.
    These amendments prescribe implementation of so called “clear court instances” in criminal procedure, abjuring hearing cases in the Chamber of Criminal Cases.

    The stage in project on modernisation of Latvia’s courts is accomplished by organising a videoconference

    One of stages of project “Modernisation of courts in Latvia” performed collectively by Latvia and Switzerland was accomplished on the 28th of June by presentation of videoconference and sound-recording equipment organised in court room of the Supreme Court.
    The project is carried out by the Court Administration in cooperation with the Latvian Prison Administration applying funds granted by Swiss Confederation.

    The Committee on Judicial Ethics will be managed by Visvaldis Sprudzans also in future

    Newly elected Committee on Judicial Ethics called to the first meeting by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on the 22nd of June, elected Visvaldis Sprudzans, the deputy of the Chair of Zemgale regional Court for the post of the Chair of the Committee. Dzintra Balta, the judge of the Riga Regional Court was elected for the post of the deputy of the Chair of the Committee.
    Visvaldis Sprudzans is elected for the post of the Chair of this institution of judicial self-government repeatedly.
