On December 19, 2007, at 15.00, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court is convened where judges will listen to and evaluate the report prepared by the work group formed by the Supreme Court on violations of ethical standards in activities of judges found after the published phone calls of judges and attorneys. And, representatives from the General Prosecutor’s office will present opinion on the results of the inspection conducted by the General Prosecutor’s office.

On Friday, December 14, judges from regional courts were invited to attend the seminar organized by the Supreme Court. The seminar is held in three parts – the sphere of criminal law, the sphere of civil law and the sphere of administrative law, and its program is prepared by the Division of Case-law in cooperation with the Departments of the Senate and Court Chambers.

The state joint stock company “Tiesu namu aģentūra” in cooperation with the Supreme Court has published the next collection of the rulings of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court Senate of the Republic of Latvia.
The Collection contains 130 rulings adopted by the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court Senate in 2006 in the cases reviewed under the cassation procedure, or regarding which protests have been filed under Articles 483 and 484 of the Civil Procedure Law.
The Collection includes selected most characteristic rulings on law matters which courts when reviewing specific cases face repeatedly, or which have principal significance in law theory

This week in the Supreme Court is the students’ week. On October 5, two groups of students visited the court – from the Riga Secondary School No.46 and Zalves and Sproģu elementary schools, but on October 6 a student from Cēsu Gymnasium Inga Kleša became a “shadow” in the Supreme Court.

The Republic of Korea (South Korea) wishes to cooperate with the countries of the European Union, developing contacts in the field of law, as well. Invitation to mutual cooperation between the Supreme Courts of the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Korea was expressed by Bae Hyong-Won), a judge of the Supreme Court of Korea, who at the present moment holds the position of attaché of the Republic of Korea in Vienna, and who took a one day working visit to the Supreme Court of Latvia on November 29.

Plenary Session of the Supreme Court on November 23 repeatedly elected Ivars Bičkovičs the Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases. This will be already the third term for Bičkovičs in the position of the Chairman of the Chamber, for the first term he vas elected in 1996, repeatedly – in 2002.

The Division of Case-Law of the Supreme Court in cooperation with experts in criminal law have worked out and published on the website of the Supreme Court www.at.gov.lv a summary on court practice in criminal cases under Article 160 (forcible sexual assault) and Article 162 (immoral acts with a minor) of the Criminal Law.

Before the State proclamation holiday, Senator Roberts Guntis Namatēvs of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court will receive the highest award of the Ministry of Justice – I grade Diploma and the “golden” pen. The award is conferred for contribution in strengthening of lawful order and development of unified court practice in Latvia.
