On February 28, the State President Valdis Zatlers accepted the oath of Kalvis Torgans confirmed in the position of the Supreme Court judge by the Saeima (Parliament).

K. Torgans was born in 1939, he is the Doctor of Law, Professor of the Department of civil Law of the University of Latvia, the full member of the Academy of Sciences of Latvia. K. Torgans is the author of 178 scientific publications and books, co-author and scientific editor of the commentaries to the Civil Law and the Civil Procedure Law. He has led implementation of several grants and programs, at present he leads the implementation of the program on application and improvement of the Latvian private law within the framework of the European Union.

On Monday, March 3, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will be held which will decide on the appointment of Kalvis Torgans and Rudite Vidusa in a concrete Department of the Senate. Kalvis Torgans and Rudite Vidusa were confirmed in the position of the Supreme Court judges without the limitation of the term of office by the Saeima on February 14. R. Vidusa did not have to give the oath of a judge, as she already had done it when taking the position of a judge for the first time. R. Vidusa worked in the position of a judge of the Administrative District Court and the Administrative Regional Court, since February 1, 2007, she is the acting senator in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate.
