On July 1, Aivars Uminskis takes up judicial duties in the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court.

Aivars Uminskis had applied for the vacant position of a judge in the Department of Criminal Cases, and by a decision of the Council for the Judiciary of June 3, Aivars Uminskis, a judge of Riga Regional Court, was transferred to the position of a judge of the Supreme Court.

Aivars Uminskis graduated from the Police Academy where he acquired qualification of a lawyer and a Master's degree in Law. The judge has 22 years of professional experience in criminal matters. He had been working as a prosecutor for five years, for 17 years – as a judge in the Latgale Regional Court and in the Riga Regional Court, and has dealt with criminal cases both at courts of first instance and courts of appeal. He had been serving  for four years as a judge in the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court.

The vacant position of a judge in the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court was created following the decision of the Council for the Judiciary to redistribute the positions of judges between departments. Given the workload of the departments, one position has been redeployed from the Department of Civil Cases to the Department of Criminal Cases.
