On the grounds of the Law “On Prosecutor’s Office”, since May 11, 2010, until the appointment of new prosecutor, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court directed the chief prosecutor of Criminal Law Department of General Prosecutor’s Office Arvids Kalnins to execute duties of general prosecutor. The Writ of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has been issued today, on May 10.

According to the Law “On Prosecutor’s Office”, in cases of termination of the term of office of general prosecutor, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has to state, which one of chief prosecutors of departments of General Prosecutor’s Office will execute duties of general prosecutor until the day of appointment of new general prosecutor. The term of office of ex-General Prosecutor Janis Maizitis ends on May 10, but Saeima hasn’t approved a new general prosecutor for his post. Having evaluated topical issues of work of prosecutor’s office and priorities of present activity, as well as functions of each of three departments of General Prosecutor’s Office, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court directed the chief prosecutor of Criminal Law Department of General Prosecutor’s Office to execute duties of general prosecutor.
