This week Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, following an invitation of the Montenegro Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Vesna Medenica participated in the conference of the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of Balkan region „Experience gained during 10 years of independence and necessary reforms heading to European Union”. Also representatives from the Supreme Courts of European Union countries participated in the conference organised by the Supreme Court of Montenegro in cooperation with US Embassy in Montenegro.

Chief Justices discussed moving of the Western Balkans court system towards European legal system, similarities and differences of the court systems, good practice in the provision of the work quality of the courts. Also there were discussions about issues topical to all courts like role of the Supreme Courts in the creation of rights and public loyalty towards court system, cooperation of the courts with public and information about the work of courts.

Montenegro is one of the former Republics of Yugoslavia that maintained union with Serbia up to 2006. In 2006 referendum was held about withdrawing from the union of Serbia and Montenegro and establishing of independent state of Montenegro. Montenegro is the European Union candidate state since 2010.
