At the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court on April 20, Aigars Strupiss, Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, was nominated as a candidate for the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

25 of the 30 judges who participated in the voting voted for the candidacy of Aigars Strupiss.

The Saeima (parliament) must now vote for the candidate nominated by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.

Aigars Strupiss has already presented his vision of the situation and development of the Senate and the judicial system to the Judicial Council, and it had previously been sent to all judges of the Supreme Court. In the Plenary Session, the candidate for the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court emphasized that the priority of his work will be to strengthen the Supreme Court as a cassation instance by improving and increasing the efficiency of the work and cooperation among departments, as well as by developing case law and improving cooperation with lower courts. The candidate for the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court put forward the following priorities: improvement of dialogue with the executive and legislative powers, strengthening of the role of the Judicial Council, new selection procedure of judges, quality cooperation with the Judicial Training Center, as well as research and solutions regarding the length of proceedings. “I am a doer. If I have a goal – I go for it. If I have a concept – I implement it,” said Aigars Strupiss.

Responding to possible doubts about Aigars Strupss' short experience as a judge, Edite Vernusa, Senator of the Department of Civil Cases, pointed out that in six years he has acquired a sufficiently deep understanding of the court system. Jautrite Briede, Senator, of the Department of Administrative Cases, in response to the Minister of Justice's public concern that there was only one candidate, pointed out that several possible candidates have been discussed in the Department of Administrative Cases, and Aigarss Strupiss is seen by the Department as the best candidate. “Artificial competition just for the cause of competition is not necessary,” said the Senator.

Aigars Strupiss has been a judge of the Supreme Court since 2014, Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate since 2018. He is a former Chair of the Disciplinary Court, currently a member of the Judicial Council.

On June 15, 2020, the term of office of Ivars Bickovics as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court expires. According to the Law on Judicial Power, this position cannot be held for more than two consecutive terms. Ivars Bickovics was confirmed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2008 and repeatedly in 2015.
