After negative vote of Saeima on April 15, when Saeima didn’t approve Janis Maizitis for the post of General Prosecutor, a petition signed by almost 300 prosecutors was submitted to the President of the State Valdis Zatlers and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics, in which prosecutors request to save the independence of the Prosecutor’s Office and threat to independence of the independence of judicial system has been expressed. In petition prosecutors request to evaluate opportunity to move Janis Maizitis to approve him in Saeima for the post of General Prosecutor for next five years, repeatedly.

After having received the petition signed by prosecutors, on April 23, the President of the State invited representatives of prosecutors, who signed the petition, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to a meeting, to discuss such situation.

The President of the State and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court also have received a petition signed by ex-presidents Guntis Ulmanis and Vaira Vike-Freiberga, being joined by approximately 3000 Internet users with request to direct Janis Maizitis for the post of general prosecutor repeatedly.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics positively evaluates publication of any opinions related to promotion of candidate for the post of general prosecutor but he doesn’t stress any opinion as priority. While making conclusions and making decision about next candidate for the post of general prosecutor, Ivars Bickovics will take into account all expressed opinions available.
