Taking part in the 51st congress of the International Judicial Association in Yerevan, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia Ivars Bickovics had a meeting with the President of the Cassation Court of the Republic of Armenia Hovhannes Manukyan and discussed the further cooperation between the Supreme Courts of both countries. At the end of the discussions a Memorandum on Mutual Cooperation and Exchange of Legal Information between the Cassation Court of the Republic of Armenia and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia was signed.

The Memorandum states that the Supreme Courts of Armenia and Latvia will exchange legal acts which regulate court activities, investigative and legal information. The parties undertake to inform each other about the practice of the legislation and the application of laws and for this purpose to exchange general materials and the analysis of the court practice.

The highest court instances of Latvia and Armenia intend to organize mutual consultations in working out new legislative and regulative documents and interpretation of the court practice providing, when necessary, the cooperation partners assistance in highlighting and harmonization of legislation.

Upon a mutual agreement, the Supreme Courts of Latvia and Armenia might organize meetings, conferences, scientific practical conferences and seminars to learn the experience of judicial work, implementation of the national legislation and to work out common methods for the harmonization of the judicial legislation.

This is the first bilateral cooperation memorandum signed by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia. Till now, the international cooperation was implemented within the framework of the EU Association of the Supreme Court Presidents and the Association of the Highest Administrative Courts of the EU countries as the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia is a member of these organizations. However, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics was convinced in Armenia that a useful cooperation can be developed also with a cassation court instance from a country which is not a EU member state.
