Since 1st of March duties of the judge in the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court will be executed by the judge of Riga regional court Daina Treija. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court instructed ex-Chair of Judicial Panel of Criminal Cases of Riga regional court temporarily – not longer than for two years – to replace vacancy of the judge in the Supreme Court.

Part 2 of Paragraph 79 of the Law “On Judicial Power” states that for the term of vacancy or temporary absence of the judge of the chamber, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court can instruct Honoured Judge of the Supreme Court or judge of regional court to replace him.

Positive resolution has been given to Daina Treija to replace vacancy of the judge of the Supreme Court by the Judicial Qualification Committee.

Work experience of Daina Treija as a judge has started since 1996, when she started to execute duties of the judge in the court of Kurzeme district of Riga city. Since 2000 Daina Treija has worked in Riga regional court, executing also duties of the Chair of Judicial Panel of Criminal Cases for the last three years.

Daina Treija has graduated Faculty of Law of University of Latvia in 1988; in 2003 she obtained a degree of Master of Social Sciences in field of Law. In 2007 the judge obtained 2nd qualification class.

The number of judges of the Supreme Court, approved by Saeima, is 53, but at present there work only 44 judges. Duties of judge in the Chamber of Criminal Cases have been executed by 8 judges, but number of judges approved is 11. Insufficient number of judges is one of reasons of increase of number of cases pending: in 2009 in Chamber of Criminal Cases there have been reviewed only 48% of cases, the rest of cases pending by the end of the year are 371 cases.
