On July 19, Vesma Kakste finished to execute duties of a senator in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court, as term, established in the law “On Judicial Power”, for which the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court instructed the judge of the Administrative regional court to replace the senator Normunds Salenieks during his temporary absence, has finished.

It was planned that the senator Salenieks would be temporary absent since April 21, 2008 till April 20, 2009. After this date he went for a leave for child care, and he planned to use it till October 20, 2010.

The Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the senate Veronika Krumina admits that, taking into account great accumulation of cases and volume of work existing in the department for this moment, it would be difficult to work without one senator until the end of October, so she hopes to find a temporary solution to replace the senator Salenieks till he comes back to work in the Senate.

Part 11 of Paragraph 79 of the law “On Judicial Power” states that for the term of vacancy or temporary absence of the judge of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, having received a positive resolution of Judicial Qualifications Committee, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, by agreement with the Minister of Justice, can instruct the judge of the Administrative regional court to replace him/her for the term not longer than 2 years.
