Anda Briede has been appointed for the post of the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate

As from March 15, former judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases Anda Briede will start her work in the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court. Decision about appointment of Anda Briede for the post of the senator was made on February 25 by the general meeting of senators of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, in which the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court also participated with vote rights. Positive conclusion for promotion of the judge for the post of the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate was also given by Judicial Qualifications Committee, and the Department previously had also expressed positive attitude towards the candidature of Anda Briede.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court informs the President about results of work of the court in 2009

The aim of the meeting that was held of February 23, between the President of the state Valdis Zatlers and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics, was to discuss results of work of the Supreme Court in 2009 and priorities for this year. Traditionally, such meetings take place every year.

Czech deputies are interested in mutual operation of legislative and judicial power in Latvia

Delegation of Committee of Constitutional and Juridical Questions of Deputy Chamber of the Parliament of Czech Republic on February 23 has discussed in the Supreme Court procedure of attestation of General prosecutor in Latvia, question about wages of judges and other questions related to mutual operation of parliament and judicial influence. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics and deputy of the Chief Justice Pavels Gruzins has met Czech parliamentarians today. Parliamentarians of the Czech Republic were interested, how the Chief Justice evaluates procedure of appointment of General Prosecutor in Latvia – Saeima votes for candidate offered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. I. Bickovics thinks that such procedure provides political neutrality of General Prosecutor in further work. The candidate has been chosen among representatives of judicial system, and has been approved by Saeima, which represents people.

Pupils attend lessons of law in the Supreme Court

What should be changed in Latvian judicial system? Is the substitution of death penalty by life sentence fair punishment? Why foreigners, who show disrespect to Latvian monuments of culture, have been charged with so little punishments? Can a child make a testament? When unisexual marriages will become accepted legally? What a person should do if he/she doesn’t like his/her name? These and ten other different questions pupils of 12 grades of Northern Countries Secondary School asked the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate Veronika Krumina during lesson of law in the Supreme Court, which was conducted by the senator on February 19. The senator introduced pupils to Latvian court system and different categories of cases, forming her story in a way, so that she would answer to all questions pupils were interested about. She gave also concrete answers to concrete questions and expressed her opinion about questions that were more politically legal and philosophical.

The senator Vilnis Vietnieks goes to long service pension

Saeima today, on February 18, has voted for dismissal of Vilnis Vietnieks from the post of the judge of the Supreme Court by his own wish. 71 deputy voted for, 5 deputies – against it, and one deputy desisted. The senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Vilnis Vietnieks goes to long service pension. Saeima has released him from his post since February 18. Vilnis Vietnieks was born in 1944. He has worked in judicial system since 1978, starting with the post of the judge in the court of Jekabpils district; in 1985 he was elected for the post of the senator of the department of Criminal cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court. Since 2005 the senator Vietnieks is the member of Latvian Judicial Qualifications Committee.

Saeima attests Intars Bisters for the post of the judge of the Supreme Court

Saeima on February 18 has attested the present judge of Zemgale regional court Intars Bisters for the post of the judge of the Supreme Court. 77 parliamentarians voted for this decision, no parliamentarians were against, and 3 deputies abstained. The judge Bisters was born in 1974. He got his degree and qualification of lawyer in Latvian Police Academy, and now he takes Master studies in a field of law in Business High School “Turiba”. Intars Bisters has worked in judicial system since 1988. He was the judge of the court of Central district of Riga city, since 2007 he is a judge of the Judicial Panel of Civil Cases of Zemgales regional court. The structural unit of the Supreme Court, in which Intars Bisters will execute his duties of the judge, will be defined by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Seven “shadows” from Riga, Dobele and Madona get acquainted with work of the Supreme Court

On February 17, during the Day of shadows, seven pupils of secondary schools got acquainted with work of judges and employees of the Supreme Court. “Shadows” got opportunity to participate in real court session of the Chamber of Criminal Cases in the case about contraband of oil, in which there are ten accused persons, to see the historical hall of the Senate and the museum of the Supreme Court. Pupils of Riga Secondary School Nr. 3 Raimonds Freibergs and Emils Roze got acquainted with everyday work of the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Arturs Freibergs. Raimonds and Emils didn’t know that so many cases have been reviewed in written proceedings and not in court hearings. They think that it would be interesting to work as a judge just for a short time, but it might be boring to do it during lifetime. Pupils found museum of the Supreme Court, located in the bomb-shelter, to be interesting.

The judge of the Zemgales regional court Bisters has been promoted to the Supreme Court

The Juridical Committee of Saeima on February 11 accepted the draft law to be promoted to Saeima about attestation of the judge of Zemgales regional court Intars Bisters for the post of the judge of the Supreme Court. Intars Bisters was born in 1974. He got his degree and qualification of lawyer in Latvian Police Academy, and now he takes Master studies in a field of law in Business High School “Turiba”. Intars Bisters has worked in judicial system since 1988. He was the judge of the court of Central district of Riga city, since 2007 he is a judge of the Judicial Panel of Civil Cases of Zemgales regional court.

Experienced employees of Prosecutor’s Office and the Police give the advocate’s vow

Experienced prosecutors of Specialised Prosecutor’s Office of Organised Crimes and other branches Aris Bocs and Ivars Krauze change the field of professional activity and on February 4 they gave a vow of sworn advocate. The Deputy Head of Police Department of Jurmala city, the Head of the Department of Investigation of Criminal Police Evita Spalvena also joined community of advocates; she also gave a vow to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics stresses that this is the case, when community of advocates has been filled with experienced and professional lawyers. “Maybe it will not be easy to come to an opposite side of trenches. But all legal professions have one basic interest – the strengthening of rule of law in the state”, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court told to admitted advocates after accepting the vow. I. Bickovics stressed that professional advocate plays an important role in a fair result of litigation, so he wished new advocates to step into new profession fast and to be just as successful and marketable advocates, as they were in their previous legal profession.
