Judges and employees of the Supreme Court receive Marks of Distinction of the Judiciary

On April 28, twenty two judges and employees of the court, prosecutors, notaries, advocates and professors received Marks of Distinction of the Judiciary. The award has been given to eight judges of the Supreme Court and employees of the court. With Mark of Distinction of 2nd Grade there has been awarded the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court Zigmants Gencs. Zigmants Gencs has executed duties of the judge for 34 years, since 1978 – in the Supreme Court.

The President of the state meets the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and prosecutors

After negative vote of Saeima on April 15, when Saeima didn’t approve Janis Maizitis for the post of General Prosecutor, a petition signed by almost 300 prosecutors was submitted to the President of the State Valdis Zatlers and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics, in which prosecutors request to save the independence of the Prosecutor’s Office and threat to independence of the independence of judicial system has been expressed. In petition prosecutors request to evaluate opportunity to move Janis Maizitis to approve him in Saeima for the post of General Prosecutor for next five years, repeatedly.

The President of the State invites the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to a meeting

The President of the state Valdis Zatlers invited the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics to meet in Riga Palace today at 1.00 p.m. The President planned to discuss with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court the voting of Saeima of April 15, when present Head of General Prosecutor’s Office Janis Maizitis was not elected for the post of General Prosecutor for the third time, and also get to know opinion of Ivars Bickovics about further development of events. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court announced that he will not appoint a new candidate for this post until May 11, when term of office of present General Prosecutor Janis Maizitis will end.

Judges of the Supreme Court have been awarded with supreme state award

Chapter of Orders for merits for Latvia has awarded judges of the Supreme Court Pavels Gruzins and Aiva Zarina with Order of Three Stars. The deputy of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Pavels Gruzins has been awarded with the Order of Three Stars of III class. Pavels Gruzins has worked as a judge for 32 years, since 1986 – as a judge of the Supreme Court. For 20 years P. Gruzins has also been a deputy of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and since the moment of creation of the Senate in 1995 he has been the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases. Beside his direct duties, the senator is also a member of Disciplinary Committee of judges.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court I. Bickovics greets Lithuanian judges

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics today, on April 9, participates in a ceremonial event in Vilnius, dedicated to 20th anniversary of restoration of independence of the Republic of Lithuania and 15th anniversary of restoration of the Court f Appeal and regional courts of the Republic of Lithuania. Event has been organised by the Board of Justice of Lithuania and Lithuanian Association of judges.

Representatives of General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan get acquainted with the Latvian case-law in review of cases about bribery

On April 9, group of prosecutors under the guidance of Chief prosecutor of Anticorruption Department of General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan Movlud Mirzaliyev met the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Pavels Gruzins and the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases Ervin Kuskis.

The judge of ECHR calls to use cassation instance of national courts more effectively in provision of protection of human rights

In order to inform about topical questions of European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and in work atmosphere to make a discussion about problematic questions of Latvian case-law, the judge of ECHR from Latvia Ineta Ziemele met judges of the Supreme Court on April 8.

The book of ex-senator Vilnis Vietnieks “The wind of Selija” has been published

The ex-senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Vilnis Vietnieks has terminated his work in the Supreme Court on February 18, but he said goodbye to his place of work, where he had worked for 25 years, in extraordinary way, on April 1 presenting collection of his poems “The wind of Selija”. Poems published in the collection had been written since 1960-ties, parallel to work of judge.
