Statistical data summary on case files in the Supreme Court in 2013 shows that both number of cases received and number of cases pending increased. In 2013, the Supreme Court received 5521 cases and reviewed 5073 cases. Number of cases pending at the end of the year increased – from 3152 cases at the beginning of the year to 3600 cases at the end of the year.

On Wednesday, February 12, 17 pupils from Talsi, Valmiera, Preili, Jelgava and Riga visited the Supreme Court on Shadow Day. Participants of the Shadow Day, among which the youngest pupil studies in Form 6 only, kept up with duties of a judge, a court consultant and legal adviser in the Supreme Court with real interest.

On February 21, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will have to adopt decision regarding nomination to the office of the judge of the Constitutional Court by choosing between two judges of the Supreme Court. Applications to stand for this position were submitted by Ludmila Polakova, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases and Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases.

On January 24, within framework of development of positive cooperation with media, the Supreme Court organised informative educational Media Day, to which journalists from national and regional newspapers, television and web sites, who write and create broadcasts about justice, were invited.

In order to ensure precise application of provisions of Section 499 of the Criminal Procedure Law, and thus, correct qualification of crimes in criminal cases, which have been reviewed without verification of evidences, the Division of Case-law of the Supreme Court in cooperation with doctor of Law, Professor Valentija Liholaja, performed research of case-law on review of such cases. Compilation was accepted in the meeting of judges of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court.

To ensure qualitative reception and servicing to visitors in the Supreme Court, further reception hours in the Division of Document Administration and in the Chancery of the Supreme Court will be the same as working hours of the court.

In civil proceedings, individuals may conduct cases in court personally or through an advocate. Cases of legal persons have been conducted in court by officials, who act within the scope of authority conferred upon them pursuant to law, statutes or by-law, or through an advocate.
