By changing procedure of review of criminal cases and civil cases, the Supreme Court Chambers shall be eliminated

When implementing reform of court system and continuing transfer to so called system of “clear court instances”, gradual elimination of the Supreme Court Chambers has been performed.

Strategy of activities of the Supreme Court envisages strengthening of capacity of cassation instance

Fair and effective administration of justice and strengthening of independence of court system is mission of the Supreme Court, but its strategic vision is to be guarantor of justice – this has been envisaged in strategy of activities of the Supreme Court for 2014-2016, which was developed and approved at the end of previous year.

Judges have been invited to apply for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court

Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, sent letters to judges of Latvian district (city) courts, regional courts and the Supreme Court, informing them about opportunity to register their candidacy for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court.

The name of the Senate disappears from the title of cassation instance

The Supreme Court concluded last year with important event – the 95th anniversary of the highest court instance – the Senate of Latvia. However, year 2014 brought changes to Latvian court system – with amendments to the law “On Judicial Power”, which became effective on January 1, 2014, name of the Senate has been deleted from the title of cassation instance.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court does not have deputies; one of Chairs of departments will substitute the Chief Justice upon instruction

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will not have deputies in future, during temporary absence the Chief Justice, upon his/her instruction, will be substituted by one of Chairs of departments – it has been established by amendments to the law “On Judicial Power” of 13 June 2013, which become effective as from January 1, 2014, regarding reorganisation of the Supreme Court.
