EDITE VERNUSA DISCHARGES DUTIES OF THE CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES

As from today, 20 November, duties of the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases are discharged by the judge Edite Vernusa. The judge will discharge duties of the Chair of the department until the new Chair of the Department of Civil Cases will be elected.

CONCLUSIONS OF RESEARCH: PUNISHMENT FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING ARE INADEQUATE TO OFFENCE COMMITTED

When establishing punishment in criminal cases on human trafficking, nature and degree of harm of human trafficking offences and offences related to those are not assessed adequately, and as a result punishment is often inadequate to offence committed and it does not comply with purposes of punishment established in the Criminal Law, inter alia, preventive purpose to achieve, so that not only convicts, but also other individuals would obey the law and would refrain from commitment of an offence.

COMMENTS ON THE CONSTITUTION IS “THE BOOK OF BOOKS” IN LATVIAN CASE-LAW

“Let the book of comments on the Constitution opened today, in which fundamentals of the Republic of Latvia and of the Constitution are explained, have valuable life and it would occupy place closer to work in shelves of legal practitioners instead of occupying a place of honour,” Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, said, at the opening of an edition “Comments on the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia. Introduction. General Provisions”.

RECOGNITION DIPLOMAS OF THE SUPREME COURT ARE PRESENTED AT ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LATVIA

Celebrating the 95th anniversary of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, Recognition Diplomas of the Supreme Court are granted to professors of the Faculty of Law Uldis Krastins, Valentija Liholaja and to the Dean of the faculty, the professor Kristine Strada-Rozenberga; Recognition Diplomas are granted for long-term cooperation and strengthening of rule of law.

JUDGES RECEIVE MARKS OF DISTINCTION OF THE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE

During festive event organised by the Ministry of Justice on the eve of Week of National Holidays on 7 November, the highest professional award – the Mark of Distinction of the System of Justice – was presented to 21 employees of the system of justice, inter alia, to Aija Branta and Anda Vitola, judges of the Supreme Court.

ERVINS KUSKIS IS ELECTED TO THE OFFICE OF THE CHAIR OF THE JUDICIAL QUALIFICATION COMMITTEE

On 7 November, the Judicial Qualification Committee elected Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, to the office of the Chair of the Committee and Maris Vigants, the Chair of the Administrative regional court – to the office of the deputy Chair of the Committee.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT ACCEPTS AN OATH OF FIVE ADVOCATES

On November 6, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted an oath of five advocates admitted to Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates. Assistants to sworn advocates Janis Dambitis, Anna Kosinska, Ilona Kravale, Ruta Randare and Jevgenija Zinge became sworn advocates.
