The Supreme Court has performed compilation of conclusions established in case-law of administrative courts in cases related to construction, when reviewing those in context of environment protection and area development planning mainly. Case-law for period between 2008 and 2012 is analysed.

Agenda of the Plenary Session or general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court of February 21 was extensive – performance of the Supreme Court in 2013 was assessed, the Plenary Session nominated candidate to the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court, elected the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, adopted decision regarding title of the Senate in cassation instance and made amendments to the Plenary Session Manual.

On February 21, judges of the Supreme Court adopted a decision at the Plenary Session to ask the Saeima (the Parliament) to restore and to restore historical title “the Senate” to the highest court instance of the Republic of Latvia, which was taken away from it by amendments to the law “On Judicial Power” of 13 June 2013.

Today, on February 20, the President of the State Andris Berzins in his temporary residence in the blackheads House met Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. During the conversation, the President received information about performance of the court in 2013, which shows that the Supreme Court reviewed more than 5000 cases, number of cases received does not decrease, thus number of cases pending increases. Results of performance of the court will be analysed at the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, which will take place tomorrow, on February 21.

Statistical data summary on case files in the Supreme Court in 2013 shows that both number of cases received and number of cases pending increased. In 2013, the Supreme Court received 5521 cases and reviewed 5073 cases. Number of cases pending at the end of the year increased – from 3152 cases at the beginning of the year to 3600 cases at the end of the year.
