TRAINING IN MOOT COURT FOR CANDIDATES TO JUDGE’S OFFICE TOOK PLACE IN THE SUPREME COURT

On August 19, training of moot court for 20 candidates to judge’s office tool place in the Supreme Court, in cooperation with Latvian Judicial Training Centre. During the training prospective judges participated in moot court. The process was recorded and later discussed and analysed together with experienced judges – Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases and Dzintra Balta, the judge of Riga regional court.

COLLECTION OF JUDGEMENTS AND DECISIONS OF 2013 BY THE SENATE IS PUBLISHED

Collection of judgements and decisions of 2013 by the Senate of the Supreme Court is published and made its way to readers. This is the eighteenth Collection of the Judgements and Decisions by the Supreme Court Senate and it has been historical edition in some sense, as with amendments to the law “On Judicial Power” of 13 June 2013, the title of the Senate is deleted in Latvian court system as from 1 January 2014.

THE CABINET OF MINISTERS REVIEWS REPORT ON INFLUENCE OF LIQUIDATION OF THE CHAMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES TO PROCEEDINGS IN CRIMINAL CASES

On August 5, the Cabinet of Ministers reviewed information report prepared by the Ministry of Justice on influence of liquidation of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court to proceedings in criminal cases. The Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court operates until 31 December 2014, as along with reform of courts competence is redistributed among the Supreme Court, regional courts and district (city) courts, establishing that all cases shall be heard in the first instance only by district (city) courts, in the appellate instance – by regional courts and in cassation instance – by the Supreme Court. It is pointed out in the information report that it is possible to terminate operation of the Chamber of Criminal Cases in term stipulated by the law.

MOURNING NEWS – ANDREJS LEPSE, THE JUDGE OF THE CHAMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES OF THE SUPREME COURT HAS PASSED AWAY

The disease overpowered Andrejs Lepse, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court. On 31 July he passed away. Andrejs Lepse had worked as a judge for 33 years. He had been the Chair of Saldus district court; in 1985 he started to execute judicial duties in the Supreme Court. In 1995, when the Chamber of Criminal Cases was established in the Supreme Court, he was the first Chair thereof. In 1996, he was elected to the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court, returning to the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court in 2007.
