LAST YEAR IN THE SUPREME COURT – INTENSIVE WORK AND CHANGES IN STRUCTURE

Last year the Supreme Court experienced the most significant changes in its structure since previous system was established 20 years ago, and it worked in very intensive regime, having reviewed more than 4500 cases, – Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, pointed out at the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court held on 6 March, when analysing performance of the last year.

KALVIS TORGANS IS AWARDED WITH THE TITLE OF THE JUDGE EMERITUS

In the sitting of 5 March, the Saeima (Parliament) awarded habilitated professor Kalvis Torgans, the former judge of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court, with the title of the Judge Emeritus.

AGENDA OF THE PLENARY SESSION OF THE SUPREME COURT INCLUDES ASSESSMENT OF PREVIOUS YEAR AND TWO ELECTIONS

On Friday, 6 March, the Plenary Session or the general meeting of the Supreme Court will assess work of the Supreme Court in 2014, re-elect the Secretary of the Plenary Session and representative of the Central Election Commission from among judges.

THE DISCIPLINARY COURT DOES NOT ALTER TWO DECISIONS BY THE JUDICIAL DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE ON APPLICATION OF REPRIMAND TO A JUDGE

On 2 March, the Disciplinary Court, having assessed lawfulness of two decisions by the Judicial Disciplinary Committee appealed by the judge, upheld both decisions, and rejected judge’s complaints. Thus, disciplinary punishment imposed to the judge in both cases, namely, the reprimand, remains in force.
