The conversation series on Latvia’s statehood is concluded

On November 14, an event was held in which judges and employees of the Supreme Court discussed the Latvia’s statehood in the context of culture and theatre with the New Riga Theatre’s actor Vilis Daudzins.

Sitting of chairs of Departments of the Supreme Court: activities of the Commercial Register related to the execution of a judgement in a civil case are not subject to the control of an administrative court

The sitting of chairs of departments of the Supreme Court, when examining the issue of the Department of Administrative Cases on the jurisdiction of an application, acknowledged that the administrative procedure is not an appropriate means to check whether judgement in the civil case has been enforced entirely. Matters concerning the regularity of the execution of a judgment in a civil case are settled through means of civil procedure.

Professors of Riga Stradins University visit the Supreme Court

On the eve of the National Day, the professors of the Faculty of Law of Riga Stradins University visited the Supreme Court. Greeting the guests on the National Day, Ivars Bickovics, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, noted that their visit took place on a significant day when the President announced amendments to the law "On Judicial Power", which returned the name of the Senate to the court of cassation.

Supreme Court Bulletin: wishes of Latvian judges for the judicial system in its second centenary

Independence! Endurance! Courage! These are the three basic things the judges wish for the Latvian judicial system in its second centenary. And there are still dozens of other wishes that judges using mobile technologies expressed at the Latvian Judges' Conference. The latest issue of the "Supreme Court Bulletin" includes the materials of the Latvian Judges’ Conference that took place in September. These materials reflect on the centennial of the judiciary and provide insight into future prospects, emphasizing the special role and responsibility of a judge.

The claim for compensation for material damage caused by a criminal offense is not subject to review by an administrative court

At the sitting of chairs of departments convened by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the issue of the Department of Administrative Cases on jurisdiction of a case is resolved, recognizing that the claim for compensation for the material damage caused by state official’s failure to act shall not be subject to review by the administrative court, if this failure to act is recognized as a criminal offense. Then the person who committed the criminal offense is primarily responsible for the damage caused, and this person is held liable in accordance with the procedure established by the Criminal Procedure Law and the Civil Procedure Law.

Opportunity for judges of district and regional courts to temporarily work as legal research counsels at the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has announced two vacancies – judges of district (city) and regional courts are given the opportunity to apply for exchange of experience at the Supreme Court and for a certain period of time to perform the duties of a legal research counsel. One vacancy is announced for the position of a legal research counsel in the Division on Case-law and Research, the other – in the Department of Administrative Cases.

Judge Veronika Krumina gives a lesson in law at her first school

The last day of October was particularly interesting and exploratory for 12th grade students of Riga State Gymnasium No 2. Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, gave a lesson in law at school where she herself had studied for eleven years.

Edite Vernusa, judge of the Department of Civil Cases, was awarded the highest state award – the Order of the Three Stars – for meritorious service to Latvia. The Order of Chapters has awarded the judge with the Order of the 4th class.

More than 80 employees of regional and district courts visited the Supreme Court and the Court Administration on Monday, October 29, to get acquainted with the work of these institutions.

On October 25, the Saeima (Parliament), by adopting amendments to the Law "On Judicial Power", decided that in the future the Supreme Court could also be called “The Senate” and justices – senators.
