Aigars Strupiss has been confirmed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

On May 21, the Saeima (parliament) unanimously approved Senator Aigars Strupiss as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court of the restored Republic of Latvia celebrates its 30th anniversary

In 2020, there are two significant points of reference in the history of the Supreme Court, namely, in May we celebrate 30 years since the restoration of the Supreme Court of the independent Republic of Latvia, and in October there are 25 years since the restoration of the cassation instance – the Senate.

The Supreme Court carries on its work observing the conditions of a state of emergency

The operation of the Supreme Court is fully ensured also during the state of emergency in Latvia. Taking into account that the emergency situation has been extended until June 9 by a government decision, restrictions on visits in person also remain.

The highest officials of the judiciary honour Latvia's independence

On May 4, in honour of the 30th anniversary of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia, the highest officials of the judiciary – Ivars Bickovics, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Ineta Ziemele, President of the Constitutional Court, as well as the Constitutional Court judges Gunars Kusins and Arturs Kucs laid flowers at the Freedom Monument.

On May 1, 100 years have passed since the Constitutional Assembly (the first legislator in Latvia elected by the people) convened for the first meeting. Among the 150 members of the Constitutional Assembly there were four then or later senators of the Senate of Latvia.
