The Judicial Council will henceforth be chaired by Aigars Strupiss

According to the Law “On Judicial Power”, the head of the Judicial Council is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Consequently, as of June 16, 2020, when Aigars Strupiss becomes the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he also becomes the Chair of the Judicial Council.

A chair of a court may initiate an extraordinary assessment of the professional activity of a judge

On June 11, amendments to the Law “On Judicial Power” come into force, which expand the bases of extraordinary assessment of the professional activity of judges. An extraordinary assessment shall be carried out by the Judicial Qualification Committee not only when deciding on the transfer or replacement of a judge, but also on the basis of a decision of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee, and it shall also be possible for chairs of courts to do so if conditions of professional activity have been identified which are linked to significant shortcomings in the organization of work or insufficient knowledge of a judge, which is an obstacle to the quality of the proceedings.

The administrative immunity of judges is waived

Amendments to the Judicial Disciplinary Liability Law and to the Law “On Judicial Power” come into force on 11 June, extending the limitation period for disciplinary liability of judges, waiving the immunity of judges in administrative violation cases, as well as clarifying the regulations for suspending a judge from office.

On June 11, along with the amendments to the Law “On Judicial Power”, the new procedure for the selection of candidates for the position of judge, developed and approved by the Judicial Council, enters into force.

The Judicial Council will hear the candidates for the position of Prosecutor General on Monday, 8 June and on Tuesday, 9 June, and will decide on the most suitable candidate to be nominated for appointment.
