The Judicial Council has approved the standards for time limits of adjudication of cases submitted by all Latvian courts for 2021.

The approval of the strategy of the Judicial Council was postponed again on 26 February, as the Minister of Justice, whose presence was considered necessary by the majority of the members of the Council to discuss the strategy, did not participate in the meeting of the Council. The approval of the strategy was postponed for the first time at the Judicial Council meeting of January 29 to allow time for the Minister of Justice to prepare written proposals.

Faster and more efficient exchange of information in criminal proceedings, administrative violation proceedings, administrative proceedings in courts and civil proceedings has been set as the goal of the electronic (e-case) programme, and it is aimed at electronicization of these proceedings. In 2021, the introduction of the e-case in the administrative proceedings and criminal proceedings is planned.

Being aware of the fact that the promotion and maintenance of high standards of judicial ethics is a matter of responsibility of each judge, Latvian judges have adopted the Code of Judicial Ethics and have undertaken to adhere to the principles enshrined therein, as pointed out in the preamble of the Code of Judicial Ethics adopted on February 2.

In order to approve the new Code of Judicial Ethics, the Judicial Council convenes an extramural conference of Latvian judges.
The draft of Code of Judicial Ethics has been developed by the Judicial Ethics Commission. It is sent to all judges. An electronic voting on the approval of the Code will take place on February 2.

Having readdressed the issue of selection of candidates for the position of regional court judges, the Judicial Council confirmed the opinion that the selection of candidates for the position of regional court judges should be performed in a different manner than for candidates for the position of district (city) court judges.
