31 January, 2008
A week ago, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Guļāns accepted the oath of twenty four attorneys, and today, on January 31, twenty three more attorneys after being accepted to the Bar gave their oath.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court expressed hope that both the family of the Latvian attorneys and the judiciary in general has received not only a numerous but also a qualitative supplement what will promote improvement of the court practice. Although being young, the newly accepted attorneys have good education and good experience of life, and as A. Guļāns noted, they have consciously and purposefully proceeded to this goal. He wished them to remember every day in their work the values of the oath – trust, respect, decency and conscience.
This time again the ranks of attorneys were enlarged by the previous assistants to the attorneys – Dace Ligute, Ralfs Losbergs, Aldis Maldups, Vadims Mantrovs, Ilze Obricka, Māris Paipa, Ieva Ratniece, Tālis Semanis, Valerijs Sikko, Ilze Skackova, Dana Slotiņa, Arta Snipe, Edgars Soldāns, Artūrs Spigulis, Dace Stapkeviča, Linda Strause, Zane Vilcāne, Janis Začests and Mārtiņš Zalāns, as well as the lawyers of law offices Linda Piusa, Andris Purmalis and Toms Šulmanis. The oath of attorney was also given by the previous judge of the Zemgales Regional Court Evelīna Matvejeva.
The majority of the newly accepted attorneys have the master’s degree in law, Linda Piuse is also a master of the University of Indiana (USA) and continues her education in the doctoral program. Fourteen of the new attorneys are under 30.
To become an attorney, a person having reached the age of at least 25 and having the necessary education and length of service in legal work, takes an examination of attorneys. After passing the examination and receiving references, the Bar determines the place of practice for the attorneys and gives the information on the accepted attorneys to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who according to Article 46 of the Law on Advocacy accepts the oath of the newly accepted attorneys.
