Collegiate handshake. After the acceptance of the oath the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court offered a collegiate handshake to the new attorneys as a confirmation of their belonging to the judicial power. On February 7, seven newly admitted attorneys gave their oath to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court asked the new attorneys to remember what they promised and to follow it in their further professional activities as the oath contains significant words to work with respect to the country, society, judiciary and their clients. As today, by the Chinese calendar the New Year sets in, A. Gulans with a smile mentioned this coincidence and as it is done in the New Year, he wished them to start the new stage of their lives with good thoughts and good works. The attorneys in their activities will have to face different situations, and A. Gulans wished them to find such solutions regarding them that there the positive prevails.
The attorneys’ oath was given by the Deputy Director of the Department of Law of the Ministry of Regional Development and Municipality Affairs, the Chief of the Division of Civil Law and European Law, Ingmara Bergmane, the lawyer Solvita Berzina of the companies SIA “Latsin” and SIA “Skalds”, the judge Uldis Berzins of the Administrative Regional Court, the assistant Dace Cirule to the attorney B. Mikelsone, the Chief Ermins Darapolskis of the Division of Court Cases of the Legal Department of the State Revenue Service, the lawyer Inita Jurka of the law offices “Glimsted and Partners”, the owner and board member Anita Rodina of the company SIA “RA Consultations”. All the newly admitted attorneys have the higher legal education, Ingmara Bergmane and Anita Rodina are Doctors of Law.
To become an attorney, a person having reached the age of at least 25 and having the necessary education and length of service in legal work, takes the examination of attorney. After passing the examination and having recommendations, the Council of Attorneys determines the place of practice for attorneys, and notifies the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court about the admitted attorneys, who in accordance with Article 46 of the Advocacy Law accepts the oath of the newly admitted attorneys.
