Decision adopted to promote Sandra Strence to the position of the Chairman of the Riga Regional Court

Today, on July 2, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics and the Minister of Justice Gaidis Berzins decided to promote Sandra Strence to the position of the Chairman of the Riga Regional Court to be confirmed by the Saeima (Parliament).
Before the adoption of the decision Ivars Bickovics and Gaidis Berzins met with two candidates – Juris Stukans and Sandra Strence. They were found the most suitable nominees in the competition by the Court Administration, and the suitability of the candidates was assessed also by the work group established by the Ministry of Justice. Both nominees are highly valued as professionals by the Minister of Justice and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
During the interview Sandra Strence presented a clear vision of the development of activities of the Riga Regional Court and decrease of the comparatively long terms of reviewing civil cases.
At present, Sandra Strence holds the position of a judge of the Riga Regional Court, previously she was the Chairman of the Riga Region Court. She has graduated from the University of Latvia, Faculty of Law, and at this moment she attends the doctoral program.
In accordance with the law “On Judicial Power” the chairman of a regional court is appointed by the Saeima upon a joint proposal of the Minister of Justice and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
