4 June, 2013
On the 1st of June, 2013, Final of play of court proceedings in civil law organised by ELSA (The European Law Students' Association) Latvia took place in the Supreme Court.
Plays of court proceedings are frame-ups of real trials, which take place in form of competition and are popular among students of law all over the world, and, especially – in Latvia.
Play in civil law had been organised for the fifth time already, however, thanks to responsiveness of management of the Supreme Court, this year it was possible to approximate its process to “real” trial, by organising final of a play in court room, where usually cases are heard by extended composition of the Senate of the Supreme Court.
Students, who wished to participate in Play of court proceedings, had to prepare cassation complaint upon judgement of the Spring regional court, solving the situation, when conclusion of a fictive or really willed deal invaded rights of the third party – a creditor.
Team of the 3rd grade students of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia “Together we are power!” represented by Liene Abola, Krista Berzina and Madara Locane, was admitted to be the winner of the competition. Marats Golovkins was admitted to be the best speaker of the play.
ELSA Latvia were very glad to see Kalvis Torgans, the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate among “judges” of the play, who opened the final in premises of the Supreme Court and was also elected as the chair of the “court” hearing in this final.
Rest “judges”, who evaluated final of the play in premises of the Supreme Court, namely, sworn advocate, Doctor of Law Inga Kacevska, sworn advocate Valdis Bergs, Lauris Buls, sworn advocate Olavs Cers, sworn advocate, Doctor of Law Erlens Kalnins, sworn advocate Lauris Liepa, Andris Strazds and Aigars Strupiss were honoured and highly appreciated an opportunity to sit in senators’ chairs, thus gaining interesting professional experience.
