INITIATIVES ON COMMUNICATION OF LATVIAN COURTS ARE PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE OF CHIEF JUSTICES OF SUPREME COURTS OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

On Tuesday, 13 October, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, will share experience on new initiatives on communication of Latvian courts at the conference of Chief Justices of Supreme Courts of Central and Eastern European countries.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chair of the Council for the Judiciary will report on two documents approved by the Council for the Judiciary – Guidelines on communication of a court system and Strategy on communication of courts, sharing experience on issues, which urged the Council for the Judiciary to elaborate such documents and what are challenges faced by courts, when implementing communication documents in practical life.
Chief Justices of Supreme Courts of nearly 30 countries will meet at the conference of Chief Justices of Supreme Courts of Central and Eastern European countries, which is held in Brijuni on 11-14 October this year. The agenda of the conference also includes discussions on lengthy proceedings and possibilities of Chairs of courts to accelerate them, on effectiveness of courts, use of court orders in proceedings, and alternative dispute resolution methods. Statement of principles of judicial independence will also be elaborated at the conference.
Conferences of Chief Justices of Supreme Courts of Central and Eastern European countries have been organised since 2011, promoting discussions on reform of court system in Central and Eastern European countries.
Conferences have been organised with support of the CEELI (Central Eastern Europe Law Initiative) Institute. CEELI Institute is independent, international non-profit organisation, which since 1999 has dealt with development of professional and international experience of practicing lawyers.
