Starting from Monday, June 16, 2008, Ivars Bickovics holds the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The former Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases I. Bickovics in this position has replaced Andris Gulans who held the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for fourteen years.
Andris Gulans retains the status of a judge of the Supreme Court. The structural unit in which he will hold the position is to be determined upon the proposal of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. To hold the position of a senator he has to receive an approval from the Judicial Qualification Panel and a positive decision of the joint session of the senators of the respective department.
The issue on who will lead the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court will be decided upon by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. Until the convocation of the Plenary Session the judge Ervins Kuskis of the said Chamber will hold the position of the acting Chairman of the Chamber.
