On 21 January, Doctor in Law Janis Baumanis, the scientific adviser to the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, was granted the status of an expert of the Latvian Council of Science in law.

The status of the expert is granted to Janis Baumanis for one year.

In accordance with the Law on Scientific Activity, the Latvian Council of Science is a collegial body that has been established as a direct administrative institution subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science.  

The expert committees of the Latvian Council of Science provide opinions on scientific research projects, programmes and financing thereof; elaboration and improvement of criteria of evaluation of scientific research projects and programmes and criteria of evaluation of efficiency of activity of scientific institutions, and preparation and providing of an opinion on situation in respective field of science in the Republic of Latvia.

Expert committees have been elected by scientists employed in particular field of science in the Republic of Latvia.

The status of an expert of the Latvian Council of Science was previously also granted to Doctors in Law Jautrite Briede and Janis Neimanis, the judges of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court.
