Judges living in two parts of Europe – Irish colleague judge Richard Humphreys and Latvian judge Lauma Paegļkalna – have joined forces to express their view on the Russia-Belarus war against Ukraine.

Richard Humphreys is a judge at the Supreme Court of Ireland, and Lauma Paegļkalna is a judge at the Supreme Court of Latvia.

The authors have sought answers to a key question on the world agenda: are there objective ways to enhance countermeasures to end Belarus supported Russia's unlawful attack on Ukraine? According to the authors, the current response (sanctions) of the international community is less effective than that applied in response to violations of other international law, such as in cases of apartheid in South Africa and North Korea's nuclear efforts. Sanctions need to be significantly enhanced.
