27 May, 2008
Today the Judicial Commission of the Saeima (Parliament) approved the candidacy of the Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases Ivars Bickovics to the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Nine parliamentarians voted for, three were against.
Voting of the Saeima regarding the confirmation of I. Bickovics in the position is expected next week.
According to the news agency LETA, the parliamentarians from the opposition also voted for I. Bickovics today. The parties in the position had six votes, and the opposition – five votes.
I. Bickovics and the present Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans were invited to the meeting of the Commission.
According to the law, this week the term of 15 days during which the Judicial Commission had to work out the draft decision regarding the candidacy of I. Bickovics expires. The Judicial Commission reviewed this matter without waiting for the conclusion of the Constitution Protection Office regarding the admittance of I. Bickovics to the state secret.
The candidate to the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court does not find grounds for a decision of the Constitution Protection Office not to confer him admittance to the state secret.
Ivars Bickovics was nominated to the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court on May 9. Under the law “On Judicial Power”, the decision on confirmation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the position has to be decided upon by the Saeima.
