On April 28, the former Chairman of the Administrative Regional Court Aldis Lavins was appointed in the position of the Supreme Court Judge. Under the order of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court he was appointed in the position in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate.

Approval to advance Lavins to the position of the Supreme Court Judge was given by the Judicial Qualification Panel and the Judicial Commission of the Saeima (Parliament). The Saeima passed the decision on confirmation of Aldis Lavins in the position of the Supreme Court Judge on April 17.

Till now it was within the competence of the Plenary Session to decide in which of the structural units of the Supreme Court the newly appointed judge will work. Under the amendments to the law “on Judicial Power” adopted on April 3 the procedure has been changed: if the Saeima has confirmed a new Supreme Court judge, then the structural unit in which this judge will hold his/her position is determined by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by his/her order.
