On October 20, the Saeima (parliament) approved Dr. iur. Erlens Kalniņš, sworn lawyer, associate professor at the Department of Civil Legal Sciences of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The vote of the Saeima was unanimous. Erlens Kalniņš will take up the duties of a senator after taking the oath of a judge before the State President.
Erlens Kalniņš had applied for the position of senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate. The general meeting of the Department's senators gave a positive opinion on his suitability for the position.
Erlens Kalniņš had applied for the position of senator of the Supreme Court in accordance with the Law on Judicial Power which provides that a person with at least 15 years of experience as a sworn advocate can apply for the position of Supreme Court judge. In 1998, he became an assistant to a sworn advocate, and in 2003 he was admitted to the circle of sworn advocates.
Along with working as an advocate since 1998, Erlens Kalniņš has also been lecturing at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.
He has regularly presented reports at international scientific conferences of the University of Latvia. As a guest lecturer, he participated in professional development classes for judges organized by the Latvian Judicial Training Centre. He has published more than 50 popular science and science articles in various legal publications.
He has participated in the preparation of the Civil Law commentaries in the 1998 and 2002 editions, for which he received the Cabinet of Ministers Award.
In 2005, his collection of articles "Private Law in Theory and Practice" and in 2010 the monograph "Spousal property in the legal property relations of spouses" were published. Erlens Kalniņš has participated in the development of several draft laws, he was a member of the commission for the development of the Labour Law and the Commercial Law.
Erlens Kalniņš also has experience in court work, namely at the beginning of his career as a lawyer he worked as a judge's assistant at the Constitutional Court.
In 2019, as a sworn lawyer, he received the 2nd Degree Honorary Badge of the Justice System.
