Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will decide on confirmation of a senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate in the position

On Friday, January 19, judges of the Supreme Court will gather in Hall 146 to the Plenary Session to confirm in the position a new senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, as Imants Fridrihsons has left his position in the Supreme Court due to reaching the maximum age limit for fulfilling duties of a judge.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans in the Plenary Session will present information on the received applications. The wish to apply for the position of a senator till the set term – January 15 – was expressed in writing by three judges of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court – Vanda Cirule, Skaidrite Lodzina and Raimonds Gravelsins. V. Cirule works in the Supreme Court since 1994, S. Lodzina – since 1995, and R. Gravelsins – since 1990. By the decision dated December 28, 2001, of the Judicial Qualification Panel all the nominees were conferred the first qualification grade.
In the joint session of January 16 of the Department of Civil Cases, the senators evaluated the suitability of the nominees to the vacant position of a senator, and decided who of them in accordance with Article 44 of the law “On Judicial Power” to advance for confirmation in the Plenary Session. A report on this decision in the Plenary Session will be presented by the Chairman of the Department Martins Dudelis.
The regulations of the Plenary Session state that a decision is adopted if majority of the total number of judges vote for it.
