Thursday, 15 December, seven attorneys admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Attorneys gave an oath to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics.
Two doctors of law joined the Council of Sworn Attorneys – lawyer of Law Office "Cobalt" Zane Bule and Security Police investigator Rihards Polaks. Sssistants of sworn attorneys Indra Simsone and Elina Umbrasko, SIA "VK Tranzīts" lawyer Iveta Laksa, SIA "Lattelecom" business operations support manager Dace Teice and individually practicing lawyer Edgars Zelderis also were approved as sworn attorneys.
In his address to the new attorneys the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court also reminded of approaching Christmas time, saying that new lawyers have provided themselves with a valuable gift - the status of sworn attorney. But attorney’s oath confirmed with each lawyer’s signature is not a Christmas poem, but a solemn declaration which during professional career has to be read and reconsidered from time to time by each attorney.
The Chief Justice stressed that there is a link of attorney’s work with the whole judicial system, as well as link with responsibility for the reputation of the judicial system and work efficiency. The Chief Justice wished professional success and appreciation from colleagues and clients to newly admitted attorneys.
To become a certified attorney, a person with respective education and length of service takes the examination for attorneys. If the applicant passes the examination and the Latvian Council of Sworn Attorneys has not received data that under the Law on Advocacy there exist obstacles for the admittance, the Latvian Council of Sworn Attorneys admits the applicants to the association. The Chief Justice in accordance with Article 46 of the Law on Advocacy accepts the oath of the newly admitted attorneys.
