The ex-senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Vilnis Vietnieks has terminated his work in the Supreme Court on February 18, but he said goodbye to his place of work, where he had worked for 25 years, in extraordinary way, on April 1 presenting collection of his poems “The wind of Selija”. Poems published in the collection had been written since 1960-ties, parallel to work of judge.
“It is not that lawyers are cynics and they have rough souls. Judges can sing and dance, and maybe even someone has written some poem. But I don’t know any other like Vilnis Vietnieks – judge, who, having spent most of his work reviewing criminal cases, has published a collection of poems”, said the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics. He compared life of ex-senator V. Vietnieks with a spiral: started work in Jekabpils newspaper, then made a career of lawyer and, having ended his professional activity, again returned to creative work.
Poet Imants Auzins, whom Vilnis Vietnieks has called as his literary teacher, admitted that it is beautiful, if the end of work life of the judge corresponds to a beginning of new act – edition of the first book of poems. The fact that collection of poetry has been opened in the hall of the Supreme Court and poets meet lawyers has a symbolical epochal meaning, I. Auzins mentioned.
Representatives of Prosecutor’s Office, who also participated in opening of the book, stressed that literary activity of Vilnis Vietnieks is a proof that it is possible to find a border between dark and light, negative and positive. Both decisions and poems written by the senator have permanent value.
Main theme of the collection of poems is Selija. “In poetry of Vilnis Vietnieks Selija is like first love – always new, beautiful, mystic. Tempting in memories, but stinging and cold during meeting”, writes Imants Auzins in preface of the book. In the event of the opening of the book he stressed that name of Selija always has been as synonym for a word “motherland”. During Soviet period, when Latvia was the Soviet Latvia, thus – lost motherland, Selija didn’t have word “Soviet” in its name, and so it was real motherland. Vilnis Vietnieks writes also a prose, and these works are also related to Selija and its inhabitants – family of Janis Jaunsudrabins and ex-senator of the Senate Janis Skudra.
In the opening of the collection of poems Vilnis Vietnieks, the Honour Citizen of Zalves parish, stood besides flag of Selija, made especially for this event, and gave small flags of Selija to all judges of the Supreme Court, who are inhabitants of Selija. Proof of love towards Selija are also joint work to tidy up the Zalves church and concerts organised by V. Vietnieks in order to collect donations for restoration of the church, presenting the name plate to nereta Secondary School named by Janis Jaunsudrabins, cooperation with employees in field of history of culture of Selija, and other good works. In celebration of opening of the book inhabitants of Selija – teachers from Nereta, author of photos published in the book, Aivars Bite, and others cordially greeted Vilnis Vietnieks.
Also the poet Knuts Skujenieks, evaluating book of Vilnis Vietnieks, reminded of old truth that has not become banal – that motherland begins from native doorstep. He stressed one more value of this book – it is a book for heart, in which there is no venality and evil, that have conquered minds of modern people.
Celebrations due opening of book of Vilnis Vietnieks “The wind of Selija” will also take place in Selija, in Nereta. Book is available for purchase in bookshops of Riga and Jekabpils.
