The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court participates in the international conference on role and prospects of justice in the European Union

On November 21 and 22, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, participates in the international conference “Role of justice in the European Union” organised by the European Commission in Brussels, where justice policy of the European Union for next years will be discussed.
The European Commission has launched Europe-wide discussion on justice policy, presenting documents, which will be discussed at the conference. The programme includes readings and discussions about independence and efficiency of justice, supreme command of law and integration of law in the European Union area.
Documents, which will be discussed at the conference, were prepared, gathering information and input provided by the European Union member states.
The conference will be opened by Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for justice. Reports will be read by members of the European Parliament, judges of the European Court of Justice, Ministers of Justice of the European Union member states and judges of national courts, and academics.
In spring 2014, the European Commission will present Communication on future initiatives in justice policy to the European Parliament, which will be discussed at the European Council in June 2014. Input gathered at November conference will be used in preparation of this Communication in field of justice.
