The new procedure for selection of candidates for the position of a senator of the Supreme Court is approved
16 November, 2020
Under the proposal of the Supreme Court, the Judicial Council approved the new procedure for selecting candidates for the position of a senator. It aims to ensure that the best and most experienced Latvian lawyers become senators – the ones who not only meet the general standards of the position of a judge, but have also made a significant contribution to the development of law, have professional authority in the legal community and who will thus be able to contribute to the maintenance and development of the high standards of the court of cassation.
In order to provide comparable opportunities to apply for the position of a senator to both judges and lawyers of other fields specified by law, the selection criteria for candidates, the materials to be evaluated and the criteria for their evaluation have been changed.
The new procedure also takes into account the September 29 amendments to the Law “On Judicial Power” regarding the right of former judges of the Constitutional Court and supranational courts to apply for the vacancy of a senator of the Supreme Court before an open competition is announced.
The decision was adopted by the Judicial Council at its meeting on November 13.
