Today the Saeima (Parliament) elected the former Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics in the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. 63 parliamentarians voted for him, 35 – voted against.
Ivars Bickovics holds the position of the Supreme Court judge since 1992. In 1996, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court elected him in the position of the Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, and repeatedly in – 2002 and 2007.
I. Bickovics was born in 1962 in Plavinas. He is married, has a son. In 1985 he graduated from the University of Latvia with a specialty of a lawyer. After the military service, he worked as a judge in the Aizkraukles District Court for five years, and then he was invited to the Supreme Court.
Ivars Bickovics was nominated to the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court on May 9. The term of office of the present Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans expires on June 13, 2008.
