In December, five new judges started work in the Supreme Court. On Monday they got acquainted with colleagues and received a symbolic work instrument – judge’s gavel.

Vesma Kakste, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, has worked in the Supreme Court since 2008, replacing absent senators with some intervals. In her turn, Daina Treija started to execute judicial duties in a vacancy of a judge the Chamber of Criminal Cases this March. On the 16th of December, the Saeima approved them in the post of a judge of the Supreme Court with no limitation of term of office.

On the 9th of December, the Saeima approved Ineta Ozola and Valerijs Maksimovs, former judges of Riga regional court, and Lubova Kusnire, the judge of the Administrative regional court, in posts of judges of the Supreme Court. All of them have started to work in the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court. Thus, it will be possible to develop one more composition of the court, and it will promote faster review of cases.  

Four places more are vacant in the Supreme Court at present, namely, three posts of senators and one post of a judge.  Number of judges in the Supreme Court, established by the Saeima, is 53 posts, inter alia, 28 are senators’ posts and 25 – posts of judges of two court chamber.
