On Friday, November 2, 2007, at 10.00, all the judges of the Republic of Latvia will gather for an extraordinary conference where the State President Valdis Zatlers has promised to participate, as well. The agenda of the conference and the draft resolution was worked out by a work group of judges of the courts of all levels led by Veronika Krūmiņa, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court.
In the conference, speeches will be delivered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Guļāns, Minister of Justice Gaidis Bērziņš, and General Prosecutor Jānis Maizītis. Besides, the work group has asked the Chairman of the Latgale regional Court Kārlis Valdemiers to present his view on the development of the court system and understanding of ethics; legal evaluation of the existing situation and possible solutions will be offered by the Chairman of the Administrative Regional Court Aldis Laviņš; but the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Gunārs Kūtris will share his opinion on the judges ethics commission as a measure for settlement of ethical problems of judges.
To promote debates, the prepared draft resolution has been sent to the judges for submission of suggestions.
In the second part of the conference, the Chairman of the Judges Disciplinary Panel Andris Guļāns will report on the necessity to supplement the Panel, as the term of office of one of its members has expired. The conference has to elect a new member from among the judges of the landbooks
