Plenary Session will elect the chief of the Department of Administrative Cases and confirm a new judge

On Thursday, December 27, at 9.30, senators and judges of the Supreme Court will gather at the Plenary Session to elect the Chairman of the Department of Administrative Cases.
Since September 17, when the formed Chairman of the Department Valerijans Jonikāns was elected in the position of the chief of the Department of Civil Cases, duties of the Chairman of the Department of Administrative Cases were fulfilled by the senator Veronika Krūmiņa.
According to Article 44, part 2, of the law “On Judicial Power” chairmen of the departments of the Senate and the court chambers are elected by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, and the term of office of the chairmen is five years.
The second issue on the agenda of the Plenary Session will be regarding confirmation of Anita Poļakova in the position of the Supreme Court judge.
The decision of the Saeima on confirmation of Anita Poļakova in the position of the Supreme Court judge was adopted on December 13. Votes: 74 – for, 0 – against, 1 – abstained. No the Plenary Session has to decide in which department of the Supreme Court the new judge will work.
A. Poļakova graduated the University of Latvia, Faculty of Law, in 1988, she mastered her knowledge regularly in the seminars and courses organized by the Supreme Court and the Judicial Training Center, as well as attended lectures in the FIB Academy in USA, Academy of Financial Police in Italy and German classes in the Goethe Institute. Since 1999, A. Poļakova holds the position of judge of the Riga Regional Court, Panel of Criminal Cases.
