Thursday, 22 December, Saeima (Parliament) confirmed Janis Neimanis as judge of the Constitutional Court. He will replace the judge Uldis Kinis as his term of office expires.
Parliamentary vote for confirmation of Janis Neimanis in position of judge in the Constitutional Court was unanimous.
Janis Neimanis is judge of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court and an associate professor in the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. He is also a member of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee. Janis Neimanis was nominated for the position by the Supreme Court's plenary session.
On Thursday the Saeima also appointed Arturs Kucs, an associate professor and head of Department of International and European Law of Law Faculty of the University of Latvia. He was nominated by the Cabinet of Ministers for the position of the judge of the Constitutional Court. He will replace judge Kaspars Balodis as his term of office also expires.
The Constitutional Court has seven judges and in accordance with the law of the Constitutional Court judges are appointed by the Saeima. Three judges of the Constitutional Court are approved by proposal of not less than ten members of the Saeima, two more – by proposal of Cabinet of Ministers, and the rest two – by the proposal of the Supreme Court’s plenary session.
The term of Office of the Constitutional Court judges is ten years.
